I knew I still had this blog around somewhere. Don't know if I'll do anything with it, though. I have another one elsewhere under a different name that I like using, but maybe I'll find a use for this still anyway.

What's Christmas without bodily injury? [Dec. 19th, 2007|10:55 am]
[mood |soresore]
[music |random Christmas]

So yeah, Sunday I made the mistake of thinking a nice day meant I should wander out of the comfort of my apartment and walk to the nearest library to return some stuff and get some movies. A couple blocks from my destination, I slipped on an icy rut and somehow managed to twirl my way to the ground without actually moving my foot or something. The kindly fellow whose car was at the intersection at the time gave me a lift to the library since I was certain I'd be able to walk it off. Big Ha. I hobbled out of there and got a lift from someone else to the drug store where I could get some money from an ATM and then called a cab to take me to the nearest hospital.

I got to watch almost the entire viewing of Suspicion while sitting at the emergency waiting room in a wheel chair until someone was available to collect me. Fortunately, it turns out to be just a sprain and I can hobble somewhat on it now without the crutches but I got the doctor to fax a sick note to work for the whole week anyway. See if I can get a boot on by the weekend.

Fun times. Can't remember the last time I had a week off work. Too bad I had to get it this way.

I'm enjoying Questionable Content a lot. Damn fine story lines and a laugh every time. I went to the beginning and am reading it through. Just found it the other day and it's a hoot.

Colds really blow [Nov. 30th, 2007|06:01 am]
[mood |sleepysleepy]
[music |random christmas]

My nano novel got finished. I enjoyed writing it. I wouldn't mind playing with it later on, see what sort of additions and improvements I can manage for it but it's fine for now.

I got the Christmas decorating spirit last night and got my spindly tree in order. I decided this year I'd splurge on new ornaments for a Santa/reindeer/elf/toy motif. There are a few snowmen too because that can't he helped and they go with my other snowmen I had already.

Tomorrow morning I think I'll decorate the hall outside before I get groceries and use up some of the crap extra things I've got laying around.

That's about it. Oh, one title to throw your way from yesterday. An erotic massage book was delivered. There were no holds on it so I had to box it up again. That'll be another book that leaves the library before it ever gets checked out.

plugging a fave blogger... [Nov. 20th, 2007|07:13 am]

In Twenty One Minutes, get a fun glimpse of the world and the people in it as witnessed by the blogger from Behind the Counter.

To quote just one beautiful tidbit:

"His neck tendons stand out in ropey cords and make him look like the result of a vulture mating with a Cardassian."

Love it.

Who cheats at bowling, I mean really.. [Nov. 19th, 2007|09:17 pm]
[mood |annoyedannoyed]

The team playing against us tonight did. There were only three of them there but the guy bowled under his name and a teammate's and his scores were really high. Fortunately the lane next to us had the head of our league playing and caught them at it. The extra scores the guy bowled (including a game near 200 points) were going to be wiped off their team record. Apparently they've done it before and nobody told them they couldn't sub a missing teammate with someone who already showed up to play. Either get a person in to take their place (under their own name, not the missing person's name), or leave that place empty for the night. Those are the rules. They let their other missing teammate's spot sit empty. I bet the guy did it because their points for the night won't be recorded if there are three people on a team and two absent if neither of the two bothered to roll off ahead of time.

Ah well, at least the leader chick noticed. We were going to report them anyway, but better she talked to them directly than having us go tattle. But, we really wanted to tattle.

If you just want to play for fun, bowl for fun. Even in a fun league like ours is we all have to follow the rules of fair play, and that wasn't.

Let it snow, let it snow? [Nov. 18th, 2007|08:59 am]

I don't have to shovel it...

I must have been in a bizarre fit yesterday to start my decorating for whatever people are calling the festive season these days. Merry Mithrasmas..

So, lights are up, the tree is bought (spindly little thing, but not quite a Charlie Brown tree) and I've hung some garland. Ridiculously early, I am aware. Ah well. I'm likely to enjoy Christmas prep far more this year now that I'm not at Wal-mart anymore. The folks are hoping to come this year. I have to figure out a way to get that turkey I won at Thanksgiving to my kin out of town so they can use it for our Christmas meal. Still got time to ponder the how, but maybe I can borrow or rent a car for a weekend and do that. Ah yes, miss had a clever thought there.

Nano novel thing is still on the go (new excerpt up for those interested) and I guess I'll head back to that business now.

Movie moments [Nov. 16th, 2007|01:30 pm]
[mood |calmcalm]

I watched a few good movies this past week - oldies, but goodies.

I started with A Summer Place, the theme of which I expect many know even if they don't know it (everytime I sing it, I sing it with The Simpsons lyrics that Jasper used in that ep where they were trying out for some music thing? Was it maybe the ep with the B Flats? Curses..) and it was pretty okay. Sandra Dee really was the cutest. Everyone did well in that show except the boy/man SD falls for. He was pretty much an unactor. Good otherwise.

Blue Hawaii was my very first Elvis picture. I'd found it playing on some cable station while I was in Red Deer a few weeks ago but only recently got around to finding out what I'd seen to see if the rest of the movie was filled with as many sexual innuendos as that one particular scene (where Elvis meets the sexy schoolteacher bringing 4 girls around to tour Hawaii), but alas no. I take it the movie was the first time any one would have heard Elvis singing "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" right? Always hard to remember that those old songs were once brand new. A fun romp, anyway.

I found It Happened One Night at my library too (always can find the oldies there as everyone scoops up recent stuff instead) and that was a really excellent show. Anyone who'd into the classics once in a while should give it a go. I'll offer up a trivia tidbit about that one that I only remembered as I got to the scene: there's a point in the movie where Clark Gable is taking his clothes off and when he strips off his shirt and that scened pretty much killed the undershirt business because Clark wasn't wearing one. Prior to that movie, any guy without a shirt on had an undershirt on. I have no idea why I know that. On the music side (since I've mentioned music in the other two) I wonder if that "Man on the Flying Trapeze" was written for that movie. I hadn't heard that in years.

I also watched Gilda. Wow, I say. Rita Hayworth was some dazzler, all right. What a beauty. The picture was quite good too. I liked it far better than Casablanca. The leading men weren't really great looking guys but isn't that how the joke goes anyway? Ugly men always get the beautiful women? Her singing was really nice, too.

I think I like movies were people break into song. Maybe not as often as Elvis did, but it's sure a different style of movie than the "Top of the Pops" driven soundtracks of movies now.

first un-nano update in what, a week? [Nov. 9th, 2007|10:53 am]
[mood |amusedamused]

Five people are working at TS today. The rest are on holidays or taking a leiu day for Sunday's Remembrance Day observance. It's quite nice to not hear the hacks and cackles of the usual crew but I feel like we should have some kind of party around here that we can rave about all next week and make them all regret not working today.

I've noticed on the sides of buses, some ironic advertising lately. Maybe they've always been doing it but I only really noticed it yesterday. The Transit system sells space on their buses for the ads and the companies that buy the ads are car companies encouraging people to go buy themselves a Hyundai instead of another bus pass. The companies pay enough to decorate with bus with lifesized replicas of the cars they're advertising, not just a billboard blurb. The buses are festooned (love that word, festoooooooned) with plugs for giving car companies more business.

Of course, what companies can afford a full bus advertisement besides someone like GM and the other big boys?

Anyway.. books of note:

The Threesome Handbook arrived last week and is on its way to Mr. Hopeful. Perhaps I should have also put his name on the new How to Yodel and the Guide to Whitling that also arrived in the same shipment. At least he could learn something while he waited for two willing chicks.

Today I invoiced a few goodies that I'll have to put requests on once Nano's done. One was called Tigger on the Couch which is a book of psychological studies done on favourite literary characters. It Was a Dark and Stormy Night also arrived which is a book featuring winners (losers?) of the Bulwer-Lytton Contest for the worst opening sentences to a book ever. I also want to read Clues for Real Life which is a book of hints and tips for girls compiled from the original Nancy Drew series. Best I noticed while unpacking it was, "When your boyfriend is chloroformed and tied to a tree and he's just disgusted with himself at being caught instead of you for getting him into this predicament, you know he likes you."(p.85 from The Ghost of Blackwood Hall)
